Watched it for the second time (the first being about three years ago) and I find it annoying that the video box is covered with comparisons to The Matrix. The fighting scenes may reflect what had perviously been shown in the Wachowski movie but the film as a whole is nothing like The Matrix.
Equilibrium is set after the Third World War, where society has outlawed art, independence and, above all, emotions. After missing his emotional surpressive dose of Prozium, a high ranking cleric, whose job it is to rid society of "sense offenders," starts to feel for the first time in his life. As well as questioning his orders, he begins to question life itself.
In fact, the film has more in common with Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World than The Matrix, but this lazy comparison that critics made caused most people to overlook it (as Filippo Tomaso Marinetti declared, "Regard all critics as useless and dangerous"). Shame really because it's far better than The Matrix sequels and Christian Bale is a far superior actor than Keanu Reeves, portraying a man who is experiencing all manner of emotions for the first time in his life. And kicking ass while he's at it!
It's just a shame the director's follow-up was Ultraviolet!

I agree. Good movie. Well written. Great fight scenes.

I think that and The Machinist show that Christian Bale is one of the best young actors around!

He looks minging in that movie. Quite mad to look at how much weight he gained for Batman. He looks seriously ill in The Machinist.

They always go on about Robert De Niro in Raging Bull as a method actor coz of his weight gain but I think The Machinist put that to shame
